M46/M47/M90 Short Throw Shifters

Finally a Volvo short throw shifter!

Introducing my brand new ultimate short throw shifter.  No longer do you have to be a slave to the sloppiness of your stock linkages!  Tighten that assembly up with this shifter.  For something that you rest your hand on during every drive and shift dozens of times a day, you owe it to yourself to make that process enjoyable.  This shifter produces very crisp "race car" like shifting, completely transforming the transmission.  No longer do the gears feel lazy, spongy and soft.

I've replaced all the stock rubber and plastic bushings with real bearings. The main pivot point now uses a teflon lined spherical bearing, and the lower joint has a needle bearing in it that rides on a tight stainless steel shaft with an E-clip on each side for easy installation. The main shaft is a really thick steel tube, and the spring loaded reverse lockout device is aluminum and powdercoated gloss black. It's even got a working overdrive button for those of us that still have M46 transmissions. M47 drivers could use it for launch control or nitrous, or whatever. This combination completely transforms the way the M46 shifts. Every shift is tight and precise, with none of the sponginess of the stock bushings.

And lets not forget that it's a short throw shifter, an adjustable one too. By simply changing the location of two spring clips on either side of the spherical bearing, it will have 4 throw settings, 4.75", 4.4", 4.1", and 3.8" throw measured at the knob. Keep in mind that stock is 6", and even a reduction to 5" makes a noticeable improvement in throw. I made it adjustable so that you will be able to achieve the shortest throw that will fit in your vehicle, or whatever suits your taste buds. Also the knob will be in roughly the same height and position as stock.

Another benefit is that these solid tight bearings really clean up all the slop that the factory shifter has. A lot of cars with old worn out bushings have 3" of side to side play while in gear! It's atrocious. This shifter reduces that to around 0.5".  It will also fit in the BMW Getrag swaps that people sometimes do, just use the Volvo shifter fork and arm.

$225.00 - M46 shifter with button and wiring

$215.00 - M47 shifter (no button)

**NOTE** If you have a RIGHT HAND DRIVE vehicle, I need to know so that I can bend the shifter the other direction!  Also if you have a 240 transmission from '75-79, I know that the bushing dimensions need to be smaller, but I still haven't verified the exact dimensions required.

M90 5 speed

This M90 shifter retains all the awesome shifting features of our popular M46 shifter, but it lets you keep your stock "upper" part, shift boot and shift knob from the M90.  It bolts right in with no modifications required.  Once installed, the stock boot and knob make it look factory, but every shift will be MUCH crisper and tighter, not to mention shorter!

Currently we do not offer any shifters for the newer front wheel or all wheel drive Volvos, although we are considering it.  If you are interested, please inquire!

What our customers are saying:

Installation of the shifter was very straight forward with the directions provided by John. I have never done anything like that before and it was done in 45 minutes mostly because of having to keep crawling under the car because I didn't read the directions thoroughly enough haha. I "rolled" the shift point up one more notch from where John had it, and the shifting is so crisp and notchy I LOVE it. Ripping through the gears is a great feeling. It feels very much like some of the newer cars I have driven and it has given the car a very sporty feel. (Detracting from the Old-Man feel). I very highly recommend this purchase if you still have your M46 and you would like to make it much more fun to drive!

The shifter arrived this week and I figured the installation would be a nice over-the-winter project. That idea lasted until Sunday. Installation was straightforward and your comments about the tight fit of the aluminum bushings were well heeded.  A few taps with a drift and light hammer took care of that.

Your method of making the throw adjustable is really sharp.  For years I have shortened the throw on my 240’s by welding 3/4 “of rod into the shift lever below the pivot ball.  Your stock position matches the ones I have modded and, as your instructions state, are perfect for just about anyone.  The extra length I welded into the shifter did shorten the throw but did nothing to make the shifting more precise.  I only wish you had designed your shifter when I was still campaigning my ProRally 240.  Shifting is precise and much quicker than stock.  The feel is beyond what I thought could be done with an M-46.  It has me toying with the idea or removing the last bit of rubber in the system and bolting the cage directly to the tranny, without the rubber.  I suspect that would be a little too far to go on a street car.

I still enjoy thrashing my highly modified ’83 Flathood at every opportunity.  Quality aftermarket products for Volvo are hard to find and your shifter fits that description.  I usually make the East Coast VCOA meets as well as Carlisle PA in the Spring.  If you are there, look for an ’83 240 Flathood with the cf hood and blue and yellow body stripes.

Installed my "ultimate" shifter today. Feels crisp enough to put a freshly picked stock of celery to shame, yet I didn't find it stiff at all. I like the OD button better than the original. John answered my questions quickly. I personally would have preferred a longer shifter, since I like minimal travel between the wheel and shifter as per my 140. However it's probably not what the masses would want. The reverse lock out is quite nice. My stock one was gummed up and stiff. Money well spent indeed. I'd do business with him again.

Magnificent. I put mine in on Friday, but didn't get to actually try it out until yesterday. The thing shifts with a precision I didn't think was achievable on a 25 year old gearbox.

Not one for moderation, I jumped straight to the shortest throw setting. At this length, I had to use a single pair of the spacer washers to allow the selector rod to clear the transmission. The movements are watchlike - each throw is crisp, yet there is no notchiness or binding. I did not feel a large increase in effort needed to go into gear - if anything, the shorter throw makes it feel as though I am doing less work. Reverse lockout function works flawlessly. The knob has that tactile quality of being extremely grippy without stickiness; like a racquetball. My brother will never again rip the knob off in his exhuberance to snatch the next gear. Even the OD button has a shortened throw!

John's directions deserve merit as well. Thorough, clear and concise. Calling out the tools required, and the size of the allen key needed for the stock setscrew is a nice touch that saves time in preparation. Very professional.

I'm looking forward to next year's autocross season!
